From bellhop to two service tours to soft serve to ski slope, clinics and writing...
Born in Melrose, lived in Malden, educated at St. Joseph’s grammar and Malden High. Junior year summer job in 1944 was as bellhop at the Mt. Washington Hotel during the International Monetary Fund Conference. I remember vividly standing on call in the conference rooms and listening to Lord John Keynes explain to the delegates (and a 16 year old) about the economic problems facing the world.
Soon after high school, I served in the Army Air Corps at the end of WWII and joined the inactive reserve upon discharge and had the “great luck” to be recalled in l950 for the Korean conflict. The sales pitch upon discharge was that, if there were to be another war, “you want to come back in as a sergeant, don’t you?” After discharge I sold raw wool to New England mills but saw sales diminishing, and, therefore, enrolled at Boston University under the GI bill and received Bachelor and Master degrees.
My soft-serve roadside stand helped support us, and we operated it for thirty years. Following college, I taught high school for one year until I was offered the management of a small new ski area in North Andover, Boston Hill. After a couple of years, I purchased the area from the original stockholders, built a chairlift and installed an Alpine Slide for summer revenue. My second Alpine Slide/chairlift installation was on Snow King Mountain in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The oldest of our three daughters, Carol, managed the Wyoming business—she had the ability from her summer work at Boston Hills, and we were confident of her honesty in a cash business.
About l962 I contacted William Taylor at the Boston Globe reference on-the-snow ski clinics to introduce new skiers to the sport, and the Globe sponsored these until 2002. For twelve years I also conducted Globe junior golf clinics at ranges around Boston. I have had a weekly ski column in the Globe on skier safety, technique, equipment, ski area, etc. I also have written many free lance travel articles.
From l974 until its profitable sale in l987, I was president of Ragged Mountain Ski Area and Director of Skiing at Bretton Woods from l992-l997. I am a full certified member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America since its founding in l963 and a member of the Eastern Ski Writers Association and the North American Ski Journalists Association since l970.
