As many Rye residents were about to throw up their hands in disgust and trade in their cars for small boats, following seemingly endless days of rain that flooded town roads, the skies miraculously cleared. The timing could not have been better as the Rye Driftwood Garden Club’s 12th annual plant sale was scheduled for the coming weekend.
Held on May 19 and 20, the event was hosted for the sixth year in a row at longtime member Ellen Simmonds’ home on Wallis Road. Mother Nature was not quite through with her wrath, however. Drenching downpours on Friday threatened to swamp the sale, but buyers still showed up with their rain jackets and umbrellas. The weather cleared once again on Saturday morning and sales were strong until closing.
All in all, the event proved to be a great success. Money raised was budgeted to fund a scholarship for a UNH horticulture student, in addition to providing materials to beautify many public areas throughout the town.
