Al Harper

Actuarial science and computer technology blended together...

Update:
Al passed away on February 14, 2012. Obituary here.

Born in Bingham, Maine, in 1931, I moved with my family several times following my father's advancement in the textile industry. Included were Augusta, Gardiner, and Brunswick, Maine, So. Easton and Taunton, Mass., and finally Nashua, N. H.

I graduated from MIT in 1954 in mathematics.  I met Shirley 1n 1955 when she was a private-duty nurse.  She graduated from Mass. General in Boston. We married and moved to East Orange, N.J., and I took a job with Mutual Benefit Life in Newark, N.J.

We wanted to get back to New England and did so in 1960, moving to Portland, Maine.  I worked for Union Mutual Life and received my actuarial fellowship in 1974.

In 1980 I joined a management consultant and a systems designer and we formed "Renaissance" Company, dealing with actuarial and insurance software in Portsmouth.  The company was bought out in 1985, and I joined John Hancock in Boston. I was in charge of insurance research until my retirement in 1991.

During this time our family had grown to three daughters and two sons.  We moved to Rye in 1983. Over the last few years I have been president of the "Rye Over 55 Club" and coordinated the travel trips for about ten years.  After that I joined "The Community Council of Senior Citizens" in Portsmouth and taught classes for seniors in computing and Medicare part D and generally assisted the Executive Director.
