Patriotism peaks in early July with a variety of symbols from flags to bunting to celebratory bonfires and fireworks expressing peoples' pride. The bald eagle has become a national symbol. Judy Underwood took this photograph last week on the San Juan Islands, off the coast of Washington State. Also last week the bald eagle was removed from the protection of the federal Endangered Species Acts, because it is believed some 10,000 now soar above the US mainland states. The eagle was on the verge of extinction in 1963. This issue also presents another in a series of bird photos by Underwood, these taken in the Southwest.
