Fire and Police building needs …

On September 25 the New Castle Selectmen held a public meeting to solicit candidates to serve on a new Building Committee. This Building Committee will have seven members, including the fire and police chiefs, plus the Board of Selectmen as ex-officio members. Eric Katz will chair the Committee, with four more members to be selected from the public, plus an alternate. Eric Katz distributed a mission statement.

The Building Committee is to report back to the Selectmen by December 15, allowing for review and input before presenting a report to the Budget Committee in Feburary, 2009, with the expectation of the Town voting on a warrant article in May, 2009.

The Selectmen also accepted a proposal by Chet Lang to proceed with a complete redesign of the town Web site.

Clothesline art show …


Linda Gillespie.
On Saturday, September 20, 42 artists from New England and New York participated in the annual Clothesline Arts Show for the benefit of the New Castle Congregational Church Guild, organized by Linda Gillespie. In Linda's words:

There were oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, pen and ink works, and jewelry to suit every price range. Quincy Whitney was there with her recently published book, "Hidden History of New Hampshire". Claudia Hopf, author of two books on scherenschnitte (papercutting), was there with her exceptional work.

And there were a number of photographers.

Fort Stark maintenance …

Several pending maintenance projects were completed in September due to gifts and outstanding efforts by organizations: (1) restoration of the entrance flag pole (thanks to a gift by Brian and Emily Hall and the willingness of Ricci Construction Company to go the extra mile); (2) re-roofing of the Machine Shop, which was leaking, and which is now functioning as a visitor center to house artifacts and displays (thanks to the State Division of Parks and Recreation); and (3) securing the Oil House to store marine rescue equipment (thanks to Sam Page).

A peaceable kingdom …


Two Suffolk sheep now resident in New Castle.


These two sheep, sometimes called Hillary and Sarah, spent their first summer in New Castle, keeping grass cut. As with some other New Castle residents, they will be spending their winter elsewhere, expected to return in 2009.
