Spring on the Marsh

Ann L. Hopkins

(Jack Driscoll photo)

A soft rain falls
turning
brown marsh green
tufts of spiky grass
dot dark pools
where ducks fly in and out

Red-wing blackbirds
swing on last year's phragmites
while killdeer, chickadees,
and mourning doves
tend to their young

A border of trees
stands like sentinels
on the edge
blooming and blossoming
while the ocean comes and goes.

At last, winter
loses its grip
and spring
returns
fecund and hopeful.
